Adventures in air conditioning

I moved into this condo, owned by an individual and managed by no one, knowing that the air conditioning was an issue. I was reassured several times, verbally and contractually, that the central AC would be taken care of before summer started in Dallas.

Since some portion of the AC system was repaired in late March, the system has stopped working three times. First, Father’s Day weekend. Second, July Fourth holiday. Most recently, last weekend. Frankly, that is three time too many that I should have to deal with no air conditioning. Each incidence resulted in at least a couple of days of no air.

Adding to these difficulties is my landlord’s doing-you-a-favor attitude. Wait, isn’t a landlord contractually obligated to providing you with an habitable home? Yes, it is!

I’m very fortunate that a few people have offered their homes to me when and if the AC goes out again. But I resent the fact that I pay for an habitable home to a landlord who so quickly takes the cheapest way out of every situation, yet expects my gratitude for her meager efforts. I ditest her treatment of me last week, condescending to me as if she was doing me a favor by supplying air conditioning when the condo was 95 degrees.

Luckily, the AC limps on. A professional will look at it Tuesday morning for the leak. If not? I’m moving out.

First Saturday at home

P17

Because I can’t finish unpacking my books into my bookcase or put up anything unmovable in my bedroom until AT&T installs Uverse next weekend, I’m left with doing laundry and finding other projects to make my new place homier on a zero budget. I have to use stuff I already own — and why wouldn’t I? I have a housefull’s worth of decorative items and only a one-bedroom apartment to decorate. It’s a matter of strategy and editing.

First, I have tons of cardboard boxes to get rid of. Although I found most of them on Freecycle, I haven’t had any takers for my posted offer of same. Google shows me that there’s a recycling dumpster nearby. Bam!

Second, I had a couple of ideas for bringing color to my walls. In my studio apartment in Plano, I used three beautiful table runners as hanging panels for a room divider. I love the colors. I used one as a valance in the dining room.

Here’s where I get super cheap about it: I used four layers of thick cardboard to mount the table runner above the window. Nothing fancy, I just straight-up nailed the runner to the cardboard to the wall. I painted the heads of the nails so they disappear. Well, mostly.

Now I have a splash of color to cheer me!

Found: Home sweet September 26

If you will recall my previous post about how annoying it is to find an apartment, you may care to hear that I found one! I move the end of September, which seems a little far away, but it’s really good for two reasons: First, I get the exact floor plan I want, with a washer/dryer, in the building I want, with covered parking, on the third floor. Both the parking and the apartment are on the third floor, that is. Second, that far away, my parents can’t really come up with any real objections. Their big thing is that the longer I stay with them, the more money I can save. And I’m not quite “saving” money even now so much as “getting out of debt.” But I have my emergency fund fully funded, and I’ve paid off so much debt, it’s liberating. I’m not out yet, but I can be by the end of September if I suck up some things. I’m going to flock this post, so I will share a link to where I’ll be living in Old Town Plano. Yee!

Home, Wherefore Art Thou?

Why can’t every apartment complex give this kind of helpful information on their Web sites so I can narrow my decision down?! Instead, the leasing agents are like, “Ummmm… When do you, like, need to move?” My move-in date is flexible, which makes their heads explode. One agent went so far as telling me that rents vary from day to day from $705 to $780. I think $75 is a pretty big range considering that it’s actually 75 times 12, which adds up! Or I could just flush $900 down the toilet and call it 2008: The Year Ashley Fell Apart and Wasted $900 on Rent Just to Get the Frak Out of Waxahachie.
